The Rocks Redevelopment

Client: Private

Designer: Ellis Constructions

Year: 2009

Status: Completed

Scale: $2m

This project involved the extensive rebuilding of two heritage-listed houses and the construction of an adjoining contemporary residence in the heart of Sydney’s historic Rocks precinct – representing heritage work at its most sensitive and complex.

The site lies within the Millers Point Conservation Area, an area of both state and national heritage significance. It forms part of the Millers Point and Dawes Point Village Precinct, which is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register and recognised by the National Trust. Known also by its Aboriginal name Tar-ra, this area holds deep cultural, historical, and archaeological importance as one of the earliest sites of contact between First Nations people and European settlers.

The project included major civil works extending into neighbouring Council property and was undertaken in close coordination with heritage consultants and archaeologists to ensure respectful engagement with the site’s historical context.

Brass plaques placed on the buildings acknowledge the cultural significance of the site and its contribution to Sydney’s living heritage.
